How to Use the BudCups: Planting and Transplanting Guide (2026)

Quick answer: To use the BudCups, assemble the cup with the bottom plate tip facing up, fill with pre-moistened potting mix, water until runoff, then plant either a germinated seed (taproot down, 0.5 inches / 1.3 cm deep) or a rooted clone (root ball centered, crown level with the soil). Keep conditions at 72 to 78°F (22 to 26°C) and 65 to 75% humidity for the first two weeks. The BudCups exist because every other starter container forces a tradeoff between drainage and transplant safety. This guide covers the full BudCups workflow from the moment the cup comes out of the pack to the moment you transplant into a BudPot, plus a few notes on cleaning and reusing so you get the full lifetime of use out of them.

NOTE: these instructions apply to both autoflower and photoperiod cannabis plants. The BudCups workflow is identical. The only real difference is that autoflowers are less tolerant of delay, so transplant on time, not late.

The BudCups were designed to do exactly two jobs, and they do both well. Job one is planting: they are a small nursery container that dries out fast, oxygenates the root zone, and keeps young roots growing hard for the first two to three weeks of life. Job two is transplanting: when the roots are ready for more room, the removable bottom plate lets you pop the entire root ball out in one piece without tearing a single root hair. Both jobs sit right at the start of how to grow cannabis from seed, where a strong beginning sets up the whole grow.

That second part is the whole point. Most growers lose days of growth every time they transplant out of a rigid nursery pot because pulling the plant out rips through the outer roots. For a photoperiod that costs you a few days of veg. For an autoflower, which runs on a fixed internal clock, lost days become lost yield that you never get back at harvest.

This guide covers the full BudCups workflow from the moment the cup comes out of the pack to the moment you transplant into a BudPot. Two planting methods (seeds and clones), one transplant process that works for both, and a few notes on cleaning and reusing so you get the full lifetime of use out of them.

What the BudCups Are and Why the Design Matters

Before the how-to, a minute on the what. If you already own a pack you can skip ahead to Method A: Planting a Seed.

A BudCup is a one-piece, recycled-plastic nursery cup with a conical, removable bottom plate. Assembled, the cup holds about 16 fluid ounces (475 ml) of media, which is the sweet spot for a cannabis seedling or a freshly rooted clone for the first two to three weeks of growth. Seedlings that size need very little feed, which is why a pale seedling is usually not hungry.

Two engineering features make the BudCups work the way they do: the Triple Drainage System and the Shock-Free Transplant mechanism. They solve different problems at different stages of the plant's life, and they are the reason this guide exists in the first place.

The Shock-Free Transplant Mechanism

The first feature is the one that changes how you transplant. The bottom plate is removable from the outside with one finger. You do not squeeze the cup, you do not tip the plant upside down, you do not pull the stem. You push the raised tip of the plate up from below, the plate releases, and the entire root ball slides out the bottom of the cup intact.

This same pop-out mechanism doubles as your readiness check. Every few days you can lift the cup, push the plate up just enough to inspect the sides of the root ball, then click the plate back in place. The roots never get yanked, the media never falls apart, and you get a real-time view of how the plant is filling the cup.

The Triple Drainage System

Overwatering is the single most common cause of death for cannabis seedlings. In a generic plastic cup with a few holes in the bottom, water pools at the base, oxygen gets pushed out of the root zone, and the roots either rot or stop growing. Research on container design and root-zone oxygen confirms what most growers learn the hard way: drainage architecture and root-zone aeration directly determine seedling vigor and transplant success.12 The BudCups solve this with three features that work together to keep the root zone properly oxygenated:

  1. The conical bottom plate directs water outward toward the sides of the cup, away from the center where the taproot is developing.
  2. The drainage cutouts around the perimeter of the plate give that water a clear exit, so it leaves the cup instead of pooling.
  3. The raised bottom creates a gap between the drainage cutouts and any surface the cup is sitting on, so water that has already drained out cannot wick back up into the soil.

The net effect is that a BudCup cannot stay waterlogged no matter how heavy-handed you are with the watering can. Excess water has three separate mechanisms working to get it out of the root zone.

Ease of Cleaning

The BudCups are made from high-grade ABS recycled plastic and are dishwasher-safe, which matters when you are running multiple cycles per year. No warping, no cracking, no staining. We cover cleaning in detail near the end of this guide.

Method A: Planting a Seed in a BudCup

This method assumes you already have a germinated seed with a visible white taproot between 5 and 13 mm (1/4 to 1/2 inch) long. If you are earlier in the process, start with our full how to germinate cannabis seeds guide. The paper towel method is the easiest way to get a clean taproot.

You can also direct-sow an un-germinated seed into a BudCup. Same steps below, just skip the tweezers and drop the dry seed 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) deep with the pointed end down.

Step 1 - Assemble the BudCup

Take the cup and the bottom plate out of the pack. Drop the bottom plate into the cup with the raised tip facing up into the cup and the flat side facing down. It should rest on the internal ridge partway up the cup. Give it a light press with your thumb to make sure it is seated flat.

If the tip is pointing down, flip it. Assembled correctly, you will see the four drainage cutouts around the perimeter of the plate from the inside.

Step 2 - Fill With Pre-Moistened Growing Medium

Use a light, airy seedling mix. A peat or coco-based potting mix with added perlite (around 25 to 30% perlite by volume) works well. Heavy garden soil or straight compost hold too much water for a seedling and suffocate the roots. For a deeper breakdown, see the five growing mediums compared.

Pre-moisten the mix in a separate bowl before filling the cup. You want it damp all the way through but not wet enough to squeeze water out. If you can wring water out of a handful, it is too wet.

Fill the BudCup loosely, right up to the rim. Do not pack it down. Young roots need air pockets to expand into. Give the cup one gentle tap on the table to settle the surface and that is enough.

Step 3 - Water Until Runoff

Before you plant, give the filled BudCup a full watering with dechlorinated water at pH 6.0 to 6.5. Water slowly and evenly across the surface until you see a few drops coming out the bottom drainage cutouts. That is the runoff signal and it tells you two things: the soil column is fully and evenly saturated, and the Triple Drainage System is doing its job.

Watering first and planting second is the right order here. It avoids dry pockets in the middle of the soil column that would otherwise stay dry forever (dry peat and coco can be surprisingly hard to rewet once they sit), and it means the seed is dropped straight into an evenly moist environment.

Step 4 - Plant the Seed

Use a pencil, chopstick, or clean finger to poke a hole 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) deep in the center of the soil. That depth is important. Too shallow and you end up with "helmet head" where the seed shell gets stuck on the cotyledons. Too deep and the seedling exhausts its reserves before breaking the surface.

Use tweezers to place the germinated seed into the hole with the white taproot pointing down. Never touch the taproot itself. The root hairs on the surface are extremely fragile and any damage costs you days of recovery.

Cover the hole gently with loose soil from the sides. Do not press down. Mist the surface lightly with dechlorinated water to settle the top layer.

Step 5 - Set the Environment

Place the BudCup under a humidity dome or inside a propagator tray. Target conditions for the first week:

  • Temperature: 72 to 78°F (22 to 26°C)
  • Humidity: 65 to 75%
  • Light: dim for the first 48 hours, then 100 to 200 PPFD at canopy height once the cotyledons break the surface

Method B: Planting a Rooted Clone in a BudCup

This method assumes you already have a rooted clone. That means a cutting that has been in a propagator or rooting cube for 10 to 21 days and has visible white roots of at least 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) long. If the cutting still only has callus tissue or a few hair-thin root nubs, leave it where it is for another few days.

A clone that is not actually rooted yet will not survive the move into a BudCup. The medium-to-cube contact is different, the watering profile is different, and the roots will not establish fast enough. Confirm roots before you transplant.

Step 1 - Assemble, Fill, and Water the BudCup

Same as Method A. Bottom plate tip up, light airy pre-moistened potting mix, fill to the rim without packing, then water until you see runoff at the bottom. You want the soil column fully saturated before the clone goes in.

Step 2 - Make a Pocket for the Root Cube

Using your fingers or a small tool, dig out a pocket in the center of the soil that matches the size of your rooting cube (rockwool, Rapid Rooter, peat plug, or root ball from a soil propagator). The pocket should be deep enough that the top of the cube sits flush with the surrounding soil, not proud of it and not buried.

If your clone was rooted in a soilless cube like rockwool, do not remove the cube. The roots have grown through it and any attempt to peel it off will strip them. Plant the entire cube as a unit.

Step 3 - Place the Clone

Lower the clone into the pocket with the cube oriented the same way it grew. The crown (where the stem meets the root zone) should sit just at or slightly below the surrounding soil line. Burying the crown deeper than that invites stem rot.

Backfill the pocket with loose soil around the sides of the cube. Press very lightly with your fingertips to close any air gaps along the cube walls. Water gaps here are fine. Air gaps are not.

Step 4 - Water In and Set the Environment

Water gently with dechlorinated water at pH 6.0 to 6.5 (for soil) or pH 5.8 (for coco). Target the base of the stem and the soil around the cube. Use just enough to wet the interface between the cube and the surrounding media so the new roots have a continuous moist pathway to grow into.

The goal is a moist cube, moist surrounding soil, and a small amount of runoff through the bottom drainage cutouts. If you flood the cup, you will drown the new root tips before they can establish. If you underwater, the cube dries out faster than the surrounding soil and the clone stalls.

Keep the BudCup under a dome for the first 3 to 5 days to hold humidity at 70 to 80%. Clones do not have a full root system yet, so they drink through their leaves until the new roots catch up. Once you see new top growth, remove the dome and drop humidity back to 60 to 65%.

Light intensity should stay moderate for the first week, around 200 to 300 PPFD at the canopy, then step up as the plant establishes.

Checking Root Development by Popping the Bottom Plate

This is the one habit that separates growers who nail the timing from growers who guess. Every 2 to 3 days after the first week, pick up the BudCup, push the bottom plate up from below with your finger to release it, inspect the sides of the root ball for white root tips, then click the plate back in place.

On the sides of the root ball you will start seeing white root tips within 10 to 14 days for a seedling, or 5 to 10 days for a clone. When the roots are clearly visible at the sides, the plant has fully colonized the BudCup and is ready for more room. The pop-out plate is the visibility feature here. You are not looking through drainage holes. You are physically inspecting the side of the root ball with no obstruction.

White, healthy roots are the signal. If you see brown, slimy, or mushy roots, something is wrong upstream (usually overwatering, poor drainage, or contaminated media) and transplanting will not fix it. Diagnose and correct before moving up.

If you see no roots at the sides of the root ball by day 21 for a seedling, your environment is likely off. Temperature too low and humidity too high are the usual culprits. Check both.

When to Transplant Out of the BudCups

For most home growers on a standard grow schedule, the window to transplant out of a BudCup is 14 to 21 days after planting a seed, or 7 to 14 days after planting a rooted clone.

Three reliable signals that the plant is ready:

  1. Roots visible at the sides of the root ball. Pop the bottom plate off, look at the sides, click the plate back in. White, fresh, and actively growing. Not brown, not wilted.
  2. The BudCup dries out in 24 hours or less after a full watering. When a plant is actively consuming the full volume of water in the cup that quickly, the root mass has filled the container and is ready for more room.
  3. The plant has 3 to 5 sets of true leaves (for seedlings) or clear new top growth (for clones).

Do not wait past day 28 for a seedling. Roots in a cup that size become root-bound fast, and a root-bound plant transplants worse than one moved on time. You will see yellowing leaves, stalled growth, and water running straight through the cup without being absorbed. Those are all signs you waited too long.

For autoflowers specifically, err on the earlier side of the window. An autoflower that loses 3 days to a delayed transplant is an autoflower that yields less at harvest.

The Shock-Free Pop-Out: Transplanting Into a BudPot

This is where the BudCups earn their keep. Done right, the plant never knows it was transplanted.

Step 1 - Prepare the Destination Pot

For the first transplant out of a BudCup, a 1 to 5 gallon BudPot is the right size. A 1 gallon is the classic "one size up" choice and works perfectly. A 5 gallon also works, and is often the better call if you do not want to transplant again later in veg. A healthy root ball coming out of a BudCup is dense enough and actively drinking enough that overwatering a 5 gallon pot is genuinely hard to do.

What you want to avoid is a 10+ gallon final pot for a freshly transplanted BudCup seedling. That is too much volume for the root mass to manage, the media will stay saturated too long, and you will stall growth. Fill the BudPot about two-thirds of the way with your full-strength potting mix. Make a well in the center that matches the size of the BudCup (about 3.5 inches / 9 cm wide and 4 inches / 10 cm deep). Pre-moisten the soil so the BudCup root ball is moving into wet-but-not-saturated media, which encourages the roots to expand outward fast.

If you use mycorrhizal fungi, this is the moment. Sprinkle a teaspoon into the bottom of the planting well before you set the root ball in.

Step 2 - Pop the Bottom Plate

Hold the BudCup upright in one hand. Use the index finger of your other hand to push the raised tip of the bottom plate up from underneath. The plate pops free in one motion. No squeezing the cup, no tipping the plant, no tugging on the stem.

Step 3 - Lift the Intact Root Ball

With the plate removed, the root ball is now free to slide out the bottom of the cup. Gently push the plate up higher until the entire root ball is above the rim of the cup. Catch the root ball in your free hand from above. Do not pull on the stem. The plant lifts out as one clean cylinder of media and roots.

If the root ball sticks, the media is either too dry or too wet. Too dry: water lightly, wait 5 minutes, try again. Too wet: wait a few hours for the mix to firm up, then try again. In most cases a well-timed BudCup slides out with zero resistance.

Step 4 - Place Into the BudPot

Set the root ball directly into the well you prepared in the BudPot. The top of the root ball should sit flush with the surface of the surrounding soil, not proud of it. Backfill gently around the sides. Do not pack the soil down hard. Press just enough to close air gaps.

Water in with dechlorinated water at your stage-appropriate pH. The first watering after a transplant should be a full saturation (until a few drops come out the bottom of the BudPot), then let the pot dry out meaningfully before the next watering.

Step 5 - Watch for Recovery

Because no roots were torn during the move, transplant shock is minimal and often invisible. You should see continued top growth within 24 to 48 hours. If the plant droops, hold off on watering (the root ball is probably still wet inside), keep humidity at 60 to 65%, and give it 48 hours. In our experience, a BudCups-to-BudPots transplant recovers in under two days in the vast majority of cases.

Cleaning and Reusing BudCups

BudCups are designed to last. We have customers running the same set for five years or more. Getting that lifetime out of them depends on one habit: clean them between grows.

Any container that has held living roots is also a container that has held microbes. Some of those microbes are fine. Some (fungal pathogens like Pythium and Fusarium) cause damping off in your next batch of seedlings.3 You do not want to find out which kind you had by losing a run of clones.

The Dishwasher Method (Easiest)

Separate the cup from the bottom plate. Rinse off any loose soil. Load both pieces into the top rack of a standard dishwasher. Run a normal cycle with regular detergent. The heat sterilizes the plastic and the detergent removes any residue. Pull them out, let them air dry, and they are ready for the next run.

The Manual Method

If you do not have a dishwasher, soak the cups and plates in a solution of warm water and a mild dish soap for 15 minutes. Scrub with a soft brush to remove any clinging soil or root residue, especially around the drainage cutouts. Rinse thoroughly.

For an extra layer of sanitation between grows, follow the soap rinse with a 10% bleach solution (1 part household bleach to 9 parts water) for 5 minutes, then rinse twice with clean water and air dry. That extra step is worth it if your last grow had any signs of root disease.

Tips for Best Results

  • Always pre-moisten the potting mix before filling the cup. Dry mix and a watered-in seedling is a recipe for dry pockets that never rehydrate. The whole column should be evenly damp from the start.
  • Water before you plant, not after. Fill, water until runoff, then plant. Dry pockets in the middle of the soil column are the hidden cause of a lot of seedling failures.
  • Never pack the soil. Young roots need air pockets. Fill loosely, tap once, and leave it alone.
  • Use a seedling-appropriate mix. Heavy bloom soils with high nutrient content will burn a seedling. Match the media to the stage.
  • Water the cup, not the plant. Aim the water at the soil around the stem, not at the cotyledons or leaves. Wet leaves invite disease.
  • Pop the plate every few days from day 7 onward. Inspecting the sides of the root ball is your transplant timer. A cheap habit with a huge payoff.
  • Transplant on time. The biggest mistake growers make with BudCups is waiting too long. Earlier beats later. If white roots are wrapping the sides of the root ball, move up.
  • Keep a spare bottom plate handy. If you ever lose one, you can order replacement bottom plates without buying new cups.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a cannabis plant stay in a BudCup?

Can I plant an un-germinated seed directly into a BudCup?

Can I reuse BudCups between grows?

Yes. That is the point. Separate the cup from the bottom plate, run both through a dishwasher on a normal cycle, or hand-wash with warm soapy water and optionally sanitize with a 10% bleach solution. Properly cleaned BudCups can run indefinitely.

What size pot comes after a BudCup?

A 1 to 5 gallon fabric pot. We recommend the BudPots because they are reinforced for lifting, have handles, and drain like the BudCups do. A 1 gallon is the classic step-up; a 5 gallon works too because a healthy BudCup root ball is dense enough to handle the volume without overwatering risk. Avoid jumping from a BudCup straight into a 10+ gallon pot, which is too much volume for the root mass and will stall growth.

The bottom plate is stuck when I try to pop it out. What do I do?

Stuck plates almost always mean the media is either too dry or too wet. If too dry, water the cup lightly, wait 5 minutes, and try again. If too wet, wait a few hours for the mix to firm up slightly. Never force the plate with a sharp tool. You will damage the root ball.

Do BudCups work for autoflowers?

Yes, and arguably better than any other starter container for autoflowers. Autoflowers lose yield to transplant shock because their vegetative window is fixed. The shock-free BudCups pop-out means autoflowers get the small-container benefits during seedling stage without the transplant penalty when they move up.

Can I use BudCups outdoors?

Yes, for the seedling and clone stages. Keep them in a sheltered spot (patio, porch, or greenhouse) for the first two weeks so the young plant is not exposed to full sun, wind, or temperature swings. Transplant into a BudPot or directly into the ground once roots are wrapping the sides of the root ball.

About the Author

Henrique Dias is the CEO and co-founder of BudTrainer. He is a mechanical engineer who also holds a graduate certificate in Commercial Cannabis Production from Niagara College in Ontario, Canada - the first college-level cannabis cultivation program in North America. Before founding BudTrainer, Henrique worked with Health Canada licensed cannabis producers, where he gained hands-on experience in cultivation, processing, and post-harvest management of cannabis at commercial scale.
