Fabric pots are the default container for most serious cannabis growers, and for good reason: the breathable walls air-prune the roots, drainage is excellent, and they fold flat between grows. But here is the part nobody mentions - not all fabric pots are built the same. We bought the three best-selling fabric pots online (AC Infinity, Vivosun, and DrnCrn), put them on a workbench next to our own BudPots, and measured every one with a tape measure and calipers. This is what we found, and how to pick the right fabric pots for the way you grow, whether you run a tidy indoor tent or big plants outdoors. What Makes a Good Fabric Pot? The 5 Parts That Matter

A fabric pot is a simple object, but five parts decide whether it is a tool you will still use in five years or a bag you fight every time you fill it. Here is the anatomy, and how BudPots handles each part.

  1. Top rim. The rim decides whether the pot stays open or folds shut on you. Look for one that holds its shape. BudPots use a rigid top rim that stays upright while you fill, transplant, and train, where soft fabric rims collapse inward on all three.
  2. LST grommets. The metal eyelets you thread training wire through. They have to shrug off rust and hold under branch tension. BudPots grommets are rust-proof and tear-proof, rated to 10 lb (4.5 kg) of pull, so a heavy flowering branch will not rip one out of the fabric.
  3. Handles. Where the handles sit matters more than how strong they are. BudPots use low-profile handles set below the rim, so you lift and move a plant without your hands or forearms ever dragging through the canopy.
  4. Fabric wall. Fabric is sold by weight in GSM (grams per square meter), and the label is not always honest. BudPots use a true 400 GSM wall, the only genuine 400 GSM we found. Several brands advertise 400 or 500 GSM but measured thinner on our calipers, as the numbers further down show.
  5. Fill line. You fill to the line below the grommets, not to the brim. On BudPots that fill line sits below the grommets with the full rated volume beneath it, so a 3-gallon pot really holds 3 gallons - which is not true of every brand, as the volume test shows.

The short version: AC Infinity is the best of the mass-market bags and the only competitor that hit its stated volume, but its fabric is thin. Vivosun has decent fabric but oversells its volume by a quarter. DrnCrn is the thinnest and smallest of the four. Fabric Thickness and True Volume: What the Calipers Showed

This is the section the other brands would rather you skip. We measured fabric thickness with calipers and filled each pot to the grommet line to find the real usable volume. The numbers are not close.

Two things jump out. First, volume is measured dishonestly across most of the industry. Brands quote the volume to the very top edge of the bag, but you cannot fill a fabric pot to the brim - the soil line has to sit at or below the grommets so the rim can fold over and the wire has something to pull against. Measured where you actually fill it, Vivosun loses about 25% of its advertised capacity and DrnCrn loses a third. A "3-gallon" DrnCrn is really a 2-gallon pot.

Second, fabric thickness varies by more than 2x across the group. BudPots fabric is roughly 2.5 times thicker than DrnCrn and almost double AC Infinity. Fabric is usually marketed by weight in GSM (grams per square meter), and BudPots is a true 400 GSM; several competitors advertise 400 or 500 GSM but measured thinner on the calipers, which is the gap you feel the moment you handle them. Grommets: Why Steel Rusts and Aluminum Doesn't

If you train your plants - and for a high-yield grow you do - the grommets are not decoration. They are the anchor points for every tie-down. Two things go wrong with cheap grommets.

Rust

Nearly every fabric pot on the market uses steel grommets. Steel rusts, and the coated black or silver ones rust anyway, because the pressing process that forms the eyelet cracks the coating and lets moisture in. A few waterings is all it takes. BudPots use aluminum grommets, which do not rust or corrode by nature. They stay clean for over a decade and never stain the fabric.

Tear-out

The second failure is the grommet ripping out of the fabric under branch tension. Thin fabric and an undersized grommet make this common on budget bags. Rim and Handles: The Everyday-Use Differences

The rim and the handles are the two features you feel every single time you touch the pot, and they are where soft fabric pots are most annoying.

A rigid rim solves three problems at once. When filling, the sides stay upright instead of folding in and dumping soil on the floor. When transplanting, the walls do not collapse against the root ball as you lower a seedling in. When training, the rim does not shift, so a branch you anchored yesterday is in the same place today. Every other fabric pot we tested folds inward on all three, which is exactly when you have both hands full.

Handle placement is the subtler one. AC Infinity, Vivosun, and DrnCrn all sew their handles at or above the top rim. Their handles are strong enough, but lifting means reaching down through a trained plant and dragging your forearms through the canopy. Are Fabric Pots Worth It? Fabric vs Plastic, and When to Use Each

Step back from brands for a moment. The bigger question a lot of growers ask is whether fabric pots beat plain plastic at all. The honest answer: usually yes, with two real trade-offs.

The case for fabric is rooted in how roots behave. In a smooth plastic pot, roots hit the wall and circle, eventually binding into a dense spiral. In a breathable fabric pot, the root tip reaches the fabric, meets air, and stops - then the plant pushes new branching roots behind it. This is called air pruning, and the result is a denser, more fibrous root system. The effect is well documented in nursery and tree research, where fabric containers reduced root circling several-fold compared with rigid containers.23

The trade-offs are real and worth stating plainly. Fabric pots dry out faster and need more frequent watering - the same breathability that helps the roots also lets water evaporate through the walls, and controlled trials measured higher irrigation demand for fabric over plastic.4 And a soft fabric pot tips and sags more than a rigid plastic one, which is the everyday problem a reinforced pot like the BudPots is built to solve. What Size Fabric Pot for Cannabis?

Pick the size for the plant's final stage, not the seedling in front of you. Most photoperiod cannabis plants finish well in a 5-gallon (19 L) pot; autoflowers and compact plants are happy in 3 gallon (11.4 L). Go bigger only if you are running long vegetative times or growing outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are fabric pots better than plastic pots?

For most cannabis growers, yes. Fabric pots air-prune the roots into a denser, more branching system, drain better, and run cooler at the pot wall than plastic. The trade-off is they dry out faster and need more frequent watering. If you train for a flat canopy and can water consistently, fabric is the better tool. In a very hot, dry climate with once-a-day hand watering, plastic is still defensible.

Do fabric pots really increase yield?

Fabric pots improve root structure and reduce root circling, and healthier roots support a healthier plant. But yield depends far more on light, genetics, training, and nutrients than on the container. How long do fabric pots last?

It depends entirely on fabric thickness. A thin 25-thou bag may last a season or two before fraying and sagging. Can you reuse and wash fabric pots?

Yes. Empty the spent soil, knock off loose root material, and wash the pot by hand or in the washing machine on a cold, gentle cycle, then air dry. Thick fabric handles this for years; thin fabric pots may distort or fray. Avoid bleach and high heat, which break down the fibers. Reusing pots is one of the main cost advantages of fabric over single-use options.

What size fabric pot do I need for cannabis?

Most photoperiod plants finish well in a 5-gallon (19 L) fabric pot. Autoflowers and compact plants do fine in 3 gallon (11.4 L). Do fabric grow bags get moldy?

The fabric itself resists mold because it breathes and dries, which is an advantage over plastic. Problems come from standing water under the pot or chronically overwatering. Set fabric pots on a riser, saucer, or rack so the base can drain and air can reach it, and let the top inch of soil dry between waterings. A pot that never gets to breathe at the bottom can develop mustiness.

They look alike in a photo but behave very differently once you fill, train, and reuse them.

Do fabric pots dry out faster than plastic?

Yes. The breathable walls that air-prune roots also let moisture evaporate, so fabric pots need more frequent watering than plastic. Controlled nursery trials measured higher irrigation demand for fabric containers. Plan to water more often, especially in small pots and dry climates, and consider a larger pot or a drip system if hand watering every day is not realistic for you.

How thick should fabric pot material be?

Thicker is better for durability and shape. Budget bags run around 25 to 35 thou (0.6 to 0.9 mm) and tend to sag and fray within a season or two. Why do fabric pot grommets rust, and does it matter?

Most grommets are steel, and steel rusts in a wet pot. Even coated steel rusts because forming the eyelet cracks the coating and lets moisture in. It matters if you train: rust stains the fabric and weakens the eyelet, and a corroded grommet can tear out under branch tension. Aluminum grommets do not rust at all, which is why they outlast the rest of the pot.

Do fabric pots need a saucer or tray?

Indoors, yes. Because fabric pots drain through the base and the walls, water will weep out the bottom, so set them on a saucer, tray, or raised rack to protect your floor and let the base breathe. A riser is better than a flat saucer, since it keeps the pot from sitting in its own runoff. Outdoors on soil or gravel, a saucer is optional.

Are fabric pots good for outdoor growing?

Very. Outdoors, fabric pots shine because air pruning and drainage prevent the root binding that limits big plants, and you can move plants to chase sun or dodge bad weather. Go large - 15 to 25 gallons (57 to 95 L) or more for full-season plants. The main caveat is watering: outdoor fabric pots in summer heat dry quickly and often need daily water.
