Reviews
What is in the box
- 20 BudClips® - One carton, in the color you pick. One size, no tools. $15.99 bought on its own.
- One BudHuggers® 50 ft (15 m) coil - The same color as your clips. Cut what you need. $9.99 bought on its own.
$25.98 of product for $23.99. You save $1.99, 8% off buying the same pieces separately.
Pots, soil, seeds and a tent are not in this one. If you need pots too, start at the Training Kit, 2x2 ft.
Who it is for
This is the smallest set that trains a plant properly, and it is the set most people should start with. A clip bends a branch out and holds it there. A length of wire holds the branch you cannot reach with a clip, and ties the heavy ones up later in flower. Each does the job the other cannot, which is why almost everyone who buys one comes back for the other.
20 clips is one or two plants through a full veg. If you are running three or four, take the 40-clip pair instead.
How you use it
Bending
A BudClip goes over the main stem and the branch below it, and holds that branch at the angle you set. No knots, no tape, and you move it outward as the branch thickens. Interlock two clips when you want a full 180 degrees.
Holding
Cut a few inches of wire, wrap it once around a branch, and hook the other end into a pot grommet or any fixed point. Bend the wire and the branch stays where you put it. The rubber spreads the contact so the stem thickens around the wrap instead of scarring.
Taking the clips off
About two weeks, three at the most. If a stem starts to thicken against a clip before then, move it early. The bend is permanent by that point, and the clip goes on the next branch.
Straight answers
Will a clip break my branch? Only if the branch has already gone woody. The wide mouth spreads the load across the bend instead of pinching one point, which is what snaps a branch when you train with bare wire. Bend green stems, go slowly, and take the clip off after about two weeks.
Is it worth it over twine and a bent paperclip? $0.80 a clip, and the clip is the part you stop thinking about. Twine stretches and slips and wants retying every week. If you only need to tie one tomato up once, twine is genuinely fine and we would rather say so.
Why not just buy the two separately? You can, and they are the same two items. The pair is $1.99 less than $25.98, which is the price of the pack plus the coil at list today.
Specs
- BudClips: one size, fits branches up to 3/8 inch (10 mm). Opens and closes by hand.
- BudHuggers: 3.2 mm of soft rubber over 21-gauge stainless steel, 50 ft (15 m) a coil, about 100 branches at a few inches each.
- Colors: clips and coil both come in yellow, black, blue, green or red, and the coil always matches the clips.
- Both wash in soapy water and run again next grow.
Where we use these
We wrote the guides first and built the products for them. These are the ones that use this kit:
- Low stress training - Bend first, clip it, and take the clip off after about two weeks.
- Topping - Where to make the cut, and what holds the branches open afterwards.
- Training - Topping plus continuous bending, from the first node to the flip.
Questions
Which color should I pick?
It changes nothing mechanical. Yellow is the easiest to spot in a dark tent, black disappears in a photograph. Whatever you pick, the coil comes in the same color.
Can I use the clips on an autoflower?
Yes. Clips are a low stress method and an autoflower takes them from the third or fourth node. Keep bending gentle and do not leave a clip on past three weeks.
Can I use the clips once the plant is flowering?
No. Clips are a veg tool. Once the bud sites are set a new bend cannot add one, it can only risk the ones you have. The wire still earns its keep in flower, tying heavy branches to each other so the tops hold themselves up.
Do the clips come apart or wear out?
They are one moulded piece with nothing to break off. Wash them and they go again next grow, and they are covered by a 1-year manufacturer's warranty.
