How you use it

Starting

Drop the bottom plate in, fill to the rim, water in, and sow. Write the date and the name on a sticker and put it on the cup, because in three weeks you will not remember which is which.

Checking the roots

Push the raised tip of the bottom plate up from below and the whole root ball lifts clear of the rim, where you catch it from above. White roots at every edge and a ball that holds its shape means it is ready.

Moving up

Into the 1 gal (3.8 L) pot, then soak the whole pot once and leave it alone until it has lost about half the weight the soak added, usually 4 to 7 days. Watering again before that is what stalls a transplant.
