How to Read Pre-Flowers: The Node Check
Sexing a plant by eye comes down to one repeatable move we will call the node check. It takes about thirty seconds once you know the spot. You are looking at the node, and specifically at the little tucked-in space right above the stipules, the two thin spiky growths that sit where the leaf stem joins the main stalk.
Work from the top of the plant down to about the fourth node, because the newest growth shows pre-flowers first. Bring a light and, ideally, a loupe, a small folding magnifier of 30x to 60x. A female pre-flower
A female pre-flower is a small green pod shaped like a teardrop or a tiny vase. This pod is the calyx. From the pointed top, one or two fine white or slightly translucent hairs emerge. Those hairs are the pistils (the sticky tips are technically stigmas), and they are the plant reaching out to catch pollen. If you see a hair, you are almost certainly looking at a female. A male pre-flower

Hermaphrodites and "Nanners": When a Female Turns Male

The only downsides are that you have to wait until late veg for a confident read, and that beginners misread it, usually the stipule trap. For most home growers, this is the everyday answer.
2. Feminized seeds (skip sexing entirely)
The easiest way to win the sexing game is to not play it. Feminized seeds are bred so that nearly every plant comes out female, which means no culling, no wasted pots, and no roulette. Breeders make them by inducing a female to produce pollen and using it on another female, so no male genetics are involved and the offspring come out female roughly 99% of the time. It is not a perfect 100%, and poorly bred feminized seed is more prone to the hermaphroditism above, which is the real reason to buy from a reputable bank such as a specialist seed supplier rather than the cheapest listing you can find. 3. Genetic (leaf tissue) testing
You can also skip straight to certainty. Because sex in cannabis is controlled by X and Y chromosomes,3 a lab can read a plant's sex from its DNA long before any pre-flower appears. Researchers have developed reliable genetic markers that identify male and female plants from a scrap of seedling leaf,4 and several commercial labs now offer this as a mail-in service. You clip a small leaf at two to three weeks old, send it in, and get a near-certain answer per plant before you have invested any space in it. It costs a lab fee per sample, so it is overkill for a two-plant closet grow, but for breeders and anyone running regular seed at scale it removes weeks of guessing and wasted resources.
What to Do When You Find a Male (or a Hermie)
Finding a male is not a crisis if you act before its sacs open. The decision is simple, and it comes down to one question: are you breeding or not?

If you are not breeding: remove it
Take the male out. The timing that matters is simple: get it gone before the sacs swell and split, which usually happens in the first week or two of flowering. A closed sac is harmless; an open one is a pollen cloud. Remove the plant gently so you do not jostle pollen loose, ideally in the morning before the grow room warms and sacs are least likely to be dehiscing. Some growers bag the plant first, slipping a bag over it and sealing at the stem before cutting, so nothing sheds on the way out. Do not shake it, do not carry it dripping over your females, and wash your hands and change your shirt before you go back in, because pollen hitchhikes.
If you are breeding: isolate it
If you want seeds, a male is not a problem, it is a parent. Move it well away from any flowering females, ideally into a separate space, and let it mature there. You can then collect pollen on wax paper and apply it deliberately to chosen branches with a small brush. This is a whole craft of its own, but the first rule is the same as culling: never let an uncontrolled male share air with females you want to keep seedless.
If it is a hermie or throwing nanners

For a plant that hermies badly, the honest move is usually to pull it, the same as a male, because it will keep shedding pollen and seeding its neighbors. A hermie in the corner is just a male you did not see coming.
Why Sex Matters: Sinsemilla, Space and Yield
It is worth being blunt about the stakes, because "just remove the males" undersells why. The entire quality and quantity of a bud harvest rides on keeping females unpollinated.
A pollinated female stops investing in resin and starts building seeds. That means three losses at once: less of the cannabinoids and terpenes you grew for, buds studded with seeds you have to pick out, and lower smokable weight per gram because a chunk of the flower is now seed husk. A seeded harvest can lose a large share of its value in one gust of pollen. This is the whole reason "sinsemilla" became the word for good weed.
There is a resource argument too. Every male you carry is eating light, water, nutrients and floor space that a female could be using. Common Sexing Mistakes to Avoid
Most sexing failures are not about eyesight. They are about timing and assumptions. Here are the ones that cost growers real harvests.
- Mistaking a stipule for a pollen sac. The number-one error. Those thin spikes at every node are on all plants. Wait for a real, growing pre-flower before you judge.
- Trying to sex a seedling. You cannot do it by eye, full stop. Leaf shape, node spacing and vigor tell you nothing about sex. Wait for pre-flowers or run a genetic test.
- Assuming feminized means guaranteed. Feminized seed is about 99% female, not 100%, and stress can still push a female to throw nanners. Keep checking even a feminized grow.
- Missing one male in a corner. Sex is a per-plant question. Check every plant, including the runt behind the others, because it only takes one.
